Why the Mets?

ESPN.com is reporting that Jason Bay is signing with the New York Mets. He had some good success with the Pirates in the NL Central, and then was largely successful with the Red Sox. The Mets have a recent history that is hard to stomach for the faithful from Queens, so I'm not sure why New York was such an attractive destination for Bay. He could have easily gotten the $66-$80 million from somewhere else. While there is an opening at left field in Citi Field for Bay, with Beltran and Francouer as the center and right fielders, I think Bay should have looked elsewhere. He fit in so well with the Red Sox, blending in as ManRam's replacement and not really causing a stir, and was pretty much guaranteed a trip to the playoffs every year. Sure the Red Sox signed Mike Cameron and Jeremy Hermida, and already have JD Drew and Jacoby Ellsbury, but should Bay really be threatened by those four? Cameron/Ellsbury and Drew/Hermida just scream platoons in center and right field respectively, leaving the shadow of the Green Monster free for Bay to patrol. The pressure will be to high for succeed for the NYM, and the ceiling is much higher in Boston. If I were Bay, I would have stayed right where I was, batting in the heart of Terry Francona's order.
